Vanilla Bake Shop
I checked out the brand new Vanilla Bake Shop in Santa Monica on Wilshire and 5th (a stone's throw from the new Yummy Cupcakes) this morning. It is a very clean, cute shop with a pretty brown, pink and white color scheme, and lots of friendly and nervous employees ready to help you. I bought one dozen mini cupcakes (reminiscent of Leda's) for $21.65. They are 3 for $5. (I was charged tax for this take out order, which it seems everyone does nowadays - anyone know if the law has changed?) They have a special insert to hold the cupcakes like Danties, but take a look at the photo and you will see how well it works during transport.
Their menu lists several cakes one may order, but I did not see any on display today. They also have several icebox desserts such as Tiramisu and "dirt cake," arranged similarly to a trifle in a mason jar. It looks cute in the jar, but I cannot imagine what it must look like when you dish it up on a plate (or maybe, it never make it to a plate, like my pints of Ben and Jerry's...). The cupcakes are beautiful, and excellent. Light, fluffy frosting, soft, moist cake, each cupcake with a distinct look, and cute packaging - all you could ask for in a bakeshop. I thought the end of cupcakes was near - apparently not yet.

Haha...that's so funny. I picked up a dozen of the "babies" today, and the EXACT same thing happened to me, in terms of them ALL falling over. I called them, actually, and they apologized, saying some of the inserts they were sent were the wrong size (too small). Ya think??? Yummy cakes, though...LOVE the key lime!!
You should pay no taxes on food!
You should not be taxed on food.
Love your blog. I'm so jealous you've already gone to Vanilla Bake Shop! And I agree -- the first thing I thought when I saw your pics was "Wow. Those look a lot like Leda's."
Oh Leda's Bakeshop, just remember, copy is a form of flattery! Great blog!
I have to say the babies are the coolest thing yet. I love the red velvet and the dark chocolate. I cant wait to try the dirt cake (mine will never make it to a plate)
I have to say, a friend and I went there a week ago, i had the original and she had chocolate. we thought they were HORRIBLE. the cake was dry, and the frosting tasted like crisco. we told them as much. to add insult, the cupcakes are WAY overpriced! i will NOT be back!
I went this SAT. 8/12 and the CUPCAKES WERE AWESOME!! I got a dozen babies (so cute!) and the price is now $20 flat (either no tax now, or tax is built into the price). Also, I suppose the inserts have changed because mine held in place perfectly, I love the bags they come in too (make sure you ask for a bag). My personal favorites are Key Lime Pie (vanilla cake, w/key lime custard filling, and pie crust topping... AMAZING) and the classic Southern Red Velvet. A MUST TRY.
I've tried 2 of the "Icebox Desserts" that come in the mason jars and they were AMAZING. The dirt cake & the banana creme pie were huge hits with my friends. Great to bring to dinner parties as they come in muliple sizes if you order ahead.
"prepared food" is taxable
