Taste at The Wine House

The Wine House on Cotner in west LA has opened a little tasting room (called Taste) in the store, just off of the Italian wine section. They have 4 Enomatics filled with wine available for purchase in the store. You buy a card (at the order counter in the rear of the store, not at the cash register up front), grab a glass, put the card into the machine and press the button for the wine you would like to try. Exactly like at Vinum Populi. I like being able to taste a wine before I purchase it. As a matter of fact, I did not like any of the wines I tried, and was glad I did not waste my money on a whole bottle!

This is so cool. And I love the name: "enomatic." Very retro and trendy at the same time.

Do you think a contraption like that would go over here in Italy? I think people would be a tad puzzled but perhaps amused too.

Wow how cool! So is it unlimited tasting if you buy a card?

No, you buy the card for a certian dollar amount.

I wonder how people will feel about automated tastings like this one vs. tastings with a sommelier @ a wine store/shop. I like the automated concept since I can taste for myself and not have to deal with the sommelier's possible biases -- but there are other times when I would appreciate a bit of education about the wines I'm sampling too.

That is so cool! I want an Enomatic for my apartment. That would help so much with folks drinking all my wine and never bringing any over! :)

Seriously though, I like the idea, but I'm not convinced that the wine really does stay "fresh" in those contraptions. It's fine for restaurants which go through a lot of wine pretty quickly, but how much volume of "tastes" will the Wine House go through? Regardless, I'm definitely going to stop there this weekend to check it out!

Thanks for the update!

i think this is great! I hate having to drop $$$ to experiment with full bottles of wine from a wine store-or paying a premium for flights at AOC and the like. I can't wait to give this a try.
