Susie Cakes in Brentwood

Susie Cakes, an old-fashioned style bakery on San Vicente in Brentwood just opened this week, and I was lucky enough to be there on their first day. However, I was unlucky enough to have forgotten my camera, so I went back today and shot some photos for y'all. (There was a woman there taking photos with her camera...another blogger, perhaps?) I think we finally have a totally fabulous cupcake place on the westside! What makes them different? All them have a little squirt of frosting inside. And the frosting is just sweet enough, unlike those wonderful, but diabetic-coma-inducing cupcakes from Magnolia, and the cake is nice and fluffy, unlike Sprinkles denser versions.

She also has an amazing Whoopie Pie, vanilla frosting sandwiched between two soft chocolate cakes, of which I couldn't stop fantasizing about during my spinning class tonight! She offers a few cakes, such as German chocolate, lemon, strawberry, and red velvet. She has some puddings, cookies, and even an icebox cake of chocolate wafers layered between whipped cream. Go check it out, but be prepared: those cupcakes are $3 each.

I tried it out yesterday and maybe overdid it, but how can you not want to taste a few things at a new bakery. I had an iced cookie - nothing special. The peanut butter cookie was really good, a little chewy like it had some molasses. Really good, but didn't top Clementine's (they have a peanut butter layer inside their cookie). I topped it all off with a Peanut Butter Cupcake. Great moist chocolate cake and really nice peanut butter icing. Susan (maybe susie is reserved for returning customers) introduced herself and was very nice. I was impressed by the number of people and the volume of frosting that was going on. They were out of red velvet cupcakes (luckily for me), which I'll have to go back and try to see if they can top Doughboys or Toast's. 3 hours of volleyball and 1 spinning class later, I think I've worked it all off.

Thanks for the comment. I tried thier red velvet cupcake yesterday and was a little dissapointed. It was a very light/bright red (perhaps no cocoa powder?), and essentially flavorless, but the cream cheese frosting was spectacular, like all of her forstings it was not too sweet. The cookies look great, they are just too big (5-6 inches in diameter) for my taste. I have yet to try Doughboys or Toast, I will have to add them to my list. Thanks.

unfortunately, i was really disappointed with their cupcakes. :(
of all the cupcakes i've had, i'd say yummy cupcakes are the best.
i did have the banana pudding at susie's, and that's the BEST i've ever had!!!

Hi there,
Thanks for this fabulous blog! I just tried Susie's Cakes last week. The red velvet cake was light and creamy. Yummylicious! The sour cream cheesecake was also very good. If any of you travel to the other end of LA, Auntie Em's makes fabulous cupcakes as well. Sprinkle's in BH is a bit too sweet. Clementine, Joan's on Third and Toast are just ok. Susie's is my new favorite!

My new favorite. Thank god I never have to wait in the Sprinkles' line again now that I have tried Susie's cupcakes. I had a mint chocolate (yes the green frosting enticed me!). As other readers have written, the cake was airy and light - not thick and dense like Sprinkles. The extra frosting in the middle was perfect. I have had cupcakes from Toast (not so great) and Joan's on 3rd (overrated). I am actually now thinking cupcakes for bday partys over Hansen's cakes ... a statement I never thought I would say!

Ordered the Southern Red Velvet Cake for a birthday celebration, as it is a favorite of the Birthday girl - it was really delicious!

The decoration was almost like a 50s vintage - high layers and frosted with colorful sprinkles. It was presented very nicely.

A better Red Velvet Cake than Joan's on Third (I've found that theirs almost take like it has preservatives in it - the basic taste is pretty good - but it has the texture and consistency of a Hostess twinkie) but not quite as good as the Red Velvet Cake at Ms. Peaches Soul Food in NoHo.

While Susiecakes cupcakes are good (not as good as Leda's but as good as Sprinkles), her chocolate fudge and carrot cakes are absolutely amazing.

I like Susiecakes' cupcakes (Leda's and Sprinkles are better), but I absolutely love their chocolate fudge and carrot cakes. We recently ordered both for a birthday party, and the guest couldn't stop raving about the cakes. The chocolate cake in particular is straight out of a childhood dream, only better.

SUSIES CAKES ARE THE BEST THE FIRST TIME I WENT THERE I WAS AMAZED OF HOW FREINDLY THE STAFF WAS AND THE CUPCAKES WERE DELICIOUS. I LOVE GETTING A MOCHA FRAP. AND A SUGAR AND CUPCAKE AND RELAXING IN FRONT OF THE T.V. WHILE I INDULGE MYSELF.

I love their cakes. My office will occasionally pick up a cake at Susie Cakes for someones birthday, and they are so incredible. Absolutely delicious!! Moist, rich, tasty, and sure to put a smile on everyone's face. Great staff too, especially Susie herself.

Well, lets begin by saying that I love Susiecakes cupcakes and some of the other desserts. I've tried Magnolias in New York (overrated), Toast and Joans on Third, didnt like either one (too dry for my taste),Doughboys (never again), and Sprinkles. Sprinkles was my favorite until I tasted Susiecakes. I took some to work and now they have me driving to Brentwood for cupcake orders. I have several of my friends addicted, as well as myself. I could just eat the frosting alone. i am now a Susiecakes girl. Way to go Susiecakes!!!!!!

Just tried the red velvet cake from Susie's at a birthday party last week and it was DIVINE! I was also told by the person who brought it that the red is not artificially colored (an extra plus in my book). My son who normally doesn't like cake, was fighting for the last piece! His birthday isn't for 6 more months but he's already stated that he wants a Susie's Red Velvet for his next party. I'm a carrot cake lover so I'm looking forward to trying theirs as well.

OMG!!! I just tried the red velvet cupcake and it was absolutely WONDERFUL!!!! My girlfriend actually bought me 5 different cupcaks including the mint chocolate cupcake and the chocolate peanut butter cupcake...I ATE THEM ALL in like a day. The cake is so light yet moist and the frosting is to die for!!

I thought their cupcakes were very mediocre--kind of dry and crumbly. Maybe I had some from an "off" batch. The banana and butterscotch puddings were good though.

I just tried their chocolate chip cookies with coffee from Coffee Bean and it created a really nice combo.
