Dainties Cupcakes

Just when I think I am finished with cupcakes, they pull me back in. I checked out the new Danties Cupcakes, located inside Flatbush and J Gourmet company (a catering operation). The refrigerator case separates the catering kitchen from their office, so do not expect a cute little bakery environment like Sprinkles. Danties has two things going for them: a smart little box with a level of holes the cupcakes fit in, preventing them from sliding around, and their cupcakes are unlike the others on the market. All of them are devil's food cake, with a layer of ganache, topped with flavored whipped cream, and a little squirt inside. This is an easy way to offer several flavors without too much work. The creams alone were light and flavorful, especially the blood orange and tiramisu (the chocolate cream was seriously lacking chocolate flavor) but just did not work on a cupcake. The denseness of the cakes really require a heavier topping, like regular buttercream. When you bite into a Danites, the cream deflates in your mouth, leaving you with slightly dry, too dense cake. It is not a pleasing "mouth feel." In fact, these were really disappointing. Not worth the calories, especially at $3 a pop.

Have to say if your going to pay $6 for a cup of starbucks then $3 for a dainties cupcake to go with it makes for a nice treat. Kind of enjoyed the Whipped Cream instead of butter cream for a very pleasant change

I miss cupcakes, but personally I am a strictly white/angelfood cake and buttercream frosting kind of girl.

Better than Sprinkles?

(Last time I had Sprinkles I was underwhelmed, the actual cupcake was dry, the frosting was excellent though.)

Sprinkles is way better.

I adore your blog even though it's really tempting me to go make cupcakes and/or buy plane tickets to California so I can try some of the things you wrote about.

Have you tried Vanilla Bake Shop yet? I drove to Santa Monica on Monday to try Sprinkles, Dainties and Vanilla Bake shop, but Dainties and Vanilla were both closed on Mondays :( Can you try it out and let me know if it's worth the drive? I live near Torrance so traffic is bad but if it's worth it I'll go!!!

Dainties were the best cupcakes I have ever had. I have been everywhere and I think the chocolate topping is what really makes the cake...plus the different flavors. *****

I am writing this review in response to an "incident" that occurred yesterday at Dainties. Yesterday was a Monday (a day Dainties is closed), and I had rented a cargo van to move some things from my house into storage. A friend and myself had stopped by KooKoo Roo chicken (next to Dainties),and the parking was crazy. So, my friend hopped out and I pulled the van up on the sidewalk next to the alley and partially on Dainties driveway. Now, the van was barely blocking Danties delivery car and it was Monday, a day in which they are closed. As I was waiting for my friend, I walked into Danties to check out the cupcakes. The two owners were sitting at a desk and doing what looked like accounting. A nice girl behind the counter answered a couple of questions I had about the cupcakes. I was waiting for my friend to get back so that I could buy a few cupcakes because I tossed her my wallet to pay for lunch. As I walked out to the van, the owner came out after me. He asked if the van was mine and I said yes.He asked if I was leaving soon, and I politely said in a few minutes if that was ok. He nodded his head and walked inside.10 seconds later, he came out and was starring me down. I asked him if he wanted me to move the van and he said, "Actually yeah, move the F--'in van" . My reaction was like Whoa!! I told him that it was too bad he had to be so rude because I was going to be a customer. His next comment was truly surprising. He said, "Big F--'in deal, $3.00". Now, as a business owner myself I would never, ever treat someone like that-especially at my place of business. The next thing he said blew me away. He said," Now move the F--'in van, and stop being such a tough macho chick".I personally found that remark to be especially offensive since I happen to be a lesbian. He intended it to be an anti-gay slur and it was truly disgusting. I have tried just about every cupcake shop in LA, have always loved cupcakes, and sadly had a miserable experience at Dainties Cupcakes.

I went to Dainties after reading about them on Best of LA. I was disappointed too, I can make a tastier cupcake -- and I love chocolate so it was really surprising. Maybe the hype got me all hyped up. Sorry to hear about the rudeness. I was disappointed in the store "ambiance" too, it looked like the back of a restaurant. They should do something to make it more pretty.
